flooding...again! : 7/9/2008 1100 Sun 7 Sep: Access road down to club now not passable except (possibly) in 4x4 or vans. Water still rising though.

River rising! : 6/9/2008 River to within 1m of top of slipway at 1300 Sat 6 Sep, and still rising. Road down still clear at the moment.
Thanks to everyone who helped tie up boats this morning - I think all boats in the park not otherwise anchored to the ground have been tied to lines. Rescue boat outboards in clubhouse along with mowers - better safe than sorry!
If we want a rescue boat then it will be easy to put the 2 stroke back on.
Shame about the training day - I will canvas opinion and see if we can rearrange it in the next month

ASC Ladies Race : 6/7/2008 Great sailing last weekend, particularly for the first ever Ladies Race. It was won (most appropriately) by our Lady Commodore, Clare - but congratulations to all who took part: Lucie & Marcia for persevering in the gusty winds; Andrea & Mandy for showing the cruisers who was boss and Roy who attracted a few admiring glances from onlookers at the pub in his fetching purple leotard. Seriously, it was a day of competitive sailing in difficult conditions - so many thanks to all who took part. It will definitely be in the racing calendar again next year.

Insurance in 'flood' areas : 4/7/2008 I tried to buy insurance from Newton Crum yesterday. On hearing that the boat was to be kept at a Tewkesbury club they declined to offer any more than 3rd party insurance unless the boat was stored at home. However, they will continue with existing customers - so if you have insurance with them and go somewhere else for a year, you won't be able to go back if you want to keep your boat at the club!

Spring Bank Holiday Series : 29/5/2008 Unfortunately not a single race was run over the bank holiday weekend. So Barry and I tossed a coin on Monday and I won the Series.
Let's hope it stops raining before next weekend, or we might be getting canoes out to get up the road.

Sail Training : 5/5/2008 I know I am not alone in saying a huge thankyou to everyone involved in putting on the training day yesterday. What a fantastic day.
I am only slightly bruised and sore from an amazing full day helming on the water (a first for me), can't wait till the next one. An extra special thankyou to Shaun for yesterday, and to Barry for gently setting me off last season.

After Sailing Supper - 20 April : 10/4/2008 Just to let you know of the next club social event - there will be a supper at the clubhouse after sailing on Sunday 20 April, aiming to eat around 5 to 6 pm.
George and Heather Keighley are putting on a cooked supper after the last race of the day. Last year it was a lovely evening (warmer than most during the summer !) and we ate on the balcony. I can’t guarantee the weather, but I can guarantee that the food will be excellent. If you would like to come along please let either George or myself know of the number in your party. There will be a small charge to cover costs.
Either join in the racing/cruising during the day and then stay on for the supper, or just come down for the supper – let us know of numbers by 13 April please

Training - 26 April 2008 : 10/4/2008 This is to remind you all of the first training session coming up on Sat 26 April, 10 am to 4 pm. As in previous years we will try to offer a mix of training to adults and children, depending on who turns up and what they want to do – whether it is training in the basics, a refresher course or perhaps some race training.
As an added incentive this year we have just taken delivery of a brand new club boat – an RS Vision – and so are looking forward to providing some instruction in ‘two-hander’ sailing in an exciting modern class of dinghy.
Please let Barry Simon or myself know if you would like to come along, and roughly what you would like to do – it is a great help to us if we can do a little planning in advance and get the right number of trainers, rescue boat drivers etc. in place

water level. thurs 20th : 20/3/2008 Depth of water this evening on the road from the T junction, down towards the club is about 15". It then dries out by the first bridge but I didn't walk beyond that so I cant say if there is anymore flooding nearer to the club house.

Floods : 20/3/2008 Went to club along river bank today. All boats OK, water didn't quite make boat park, but road still flooded. Newly replaced walkway has slipped off the pontoon but is still attached to bank. River level going down at fair rate and since sluice is jammed open would guess access possible by Sunday. Not there myself but will be down Monday as OD. Cheers, Barry

Water level : 20/3/2008 On 19/03/08 at 14:00 it was still up above the barbeque. The training boat is floating but tethered and the pontoons are totally inaccessible. There is a tide mark at the back of the boat park but no signs of it becoming deep enough to float anything. Hard to predict if the road will be passable by the weekend, it would be helpful if somebody could assess this on Saturday and post here.

water level : 19/3/2008 water level is now going down (17:00 18/03/08), the road is too deep for a car, sluice gate still looks jammed open, so a check on river level will give you some idea of how bad the water is along the road.

Catering on Sundays : 11/3/2008 It was a great start to the sailing season last Sunday for the White Bear races – a good turn out and good wind – lets hope it continues in that way.

On a less optimistic note, we are having to rethink the way we provide catering on Sundays around the racing. For the last few years we have had Leslie behind the galley to organise buying and preparation of the food for Sunday lunches. She left at the end of last season and we have yet to find a replacement. After some discussion around the work load on the members nominated for galley duties and also around the catering regulations that apply to organisations who sell food, we have reluctantly decided that we should stop selling food on Sunday lunchtime – at least until we can find a replacement for Leslie who can be responsible for the food preparation and be appropriately trained.

The galley will be stocked with some ‘pre-packed’ long life provisions for those members who turn up without lunches – eg packet soups, noodles etc. Of course there will continue to be tea, coffee, milk etc available and, most importantly, cakes for afternoon tea!

From now onwards, the job of the galley slave becomes quite a bit simpler – being largely to help serve tea/coffee and ensure that the galley is kept clean and tidy and, most importantly, to bring along a cake for the afternoon (did I mention that already?).

My hope is that this situation will not last for too long – and if anyone knows of someone who would be interested in providing lunches on a Sunday (there would be a small payment), please let me know. I would also welcome any other suggestions you may have regarding catering and galley duties.

Re: Information At Last : 27/2/2008 I've not received any info yet on subs or working parties, either by post or email.

If I'm not at working parties, it'll be because I am already booked through not knowing the dates, not because I'm a lazy swine!

Red Dinghy : 3/2/2008 The red dinghy Barry refers to has now been recovered by its owner. John Wagstaff told me at the skittles evening that his Miracle dinghy was not tied down, the trailer hitch was only resting on the metal ground spike. I can't see it anywhere and think might have floated off.

Road now open. : 1/2/2008 Drove down to the club this evening. Red GP14 in the stream and a laser sat on the fence at the rear of the boat park. Could not see the miracle anywhere although it was getting dark.

Winter Flood Latest : 30/1/2008 Visited club today 30 Jan. They have opened sluices so road may be clear soon. Think flood got to path level so no boats lost. However red hull 2 hander on trolley is in the stream. Cruiser Allegro is in bushes at rear of site, looks OK. Boats tied to rear boat park fence and those parked near stream to north in a mess but no obvious damage. Much detritus around. Club hut fine but bosun's locker in a mess. Nothing a working party can't fix.

churchyard wall under water : 19/1/2008 Flood water level is now up to the top of the churchyard wall. Aprox. 2ft from the top of the road sign on the lower triangle road junction..

Road flooded. Mon. 14th : 14/1/2008 At chaceley the road is flooded as far as the church. I havn't been down to the club but the river level looks much higher at Mythe bridge and the road to Lower Lode pub is also flooded so I presume it has come over the river bank, not just standing rain water as was the case on Saturday.

river level saturday 12-1-08 : 13/1/2008 Club still accessible by road. Drove down today just to check. The river level is still a few feet below the path. See photos in gallery.
Some more photos added to the web site from my album, showing the variety of boats sailed at ASC.
Have a look to see if you are there. More will be added later. Hope you enjoy them, Neville.
